Subaru Road Racing Team Prepares for Challenging Weekend; Subaru drivers Aquilante, Skavnes now 2nd in Driver Championship points
Phoenixville, PA -- July 15, 2009 - Imagine driving in a two-and-a-half hour race event in the middle of a July Saturday afternoon in Alabama. The first thought that comes to mind may be: "We're gonna sweat buckets!"
Yet, Subaru Road Racing Team (SRRT) drivers Andrew Aquilante and Kristian Skavnes will be conditioned and prepared for this Saturday's Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge series race at Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham, Ala.
Their race car is the #111 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec.B., with Subaru one of nine car manufacturers represented in the KONI series' Street Tuner class.
Andrew and Kris arrive to the race (televised on SPEED TV, July 25, Noon ET) sitting second in Driver Championship points, after seven of 11 races.
"Two things they need to remember all weekend -- the whole team needs to remember," noted team owner Joe Aquilante. "Stay hydrated and focus on the big picture. No fender-bender scraps on a tight track like this because if you're in the pits for anything other than your single fuel stop, your day has gone bad."
The 2.3-mile, 16-turn Barber layout is one of the busiest and slowest tracks, in terms of average miles-per-hour speed, that the teams will visit this year.
"This is a plus for us," Aquilante added. "The Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system should give us better 'dig' out of the turns and up the hills, much like we see at tracks like Mid-Ohio."
Aquilante owns the Phoenixville, Pa.-based SRRT Phoenix outfit which prepares the team's Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec.B race car and serves as factory race partner for Subaru of America, Inc. This is SRRT's third season racing the Subaru.
"Kris and Chuck Hemmingson scored a solid second place for Subaru at Barber in 2006," added James Han, Motorsports Marketing Manager for Subaru of America, Inc. "We've got a capable and competitive platform in the Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec.B, and the team's ability to extract maximum potential from the #111 car will serve us well as the championship winds down."
Qualifying is scheduled for Saturday at 12:10pm (ET) with the race taking the green flag at 3:50pm (ET). Fans can follow a live timing and scoring feed for the race at www.grand-am.com.
