DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 2, 2001) - Doug Goad, of Farmington, Mich., and Devan Powell, of Port Perry, Ontario, kicked off the Grand-Am Cup season today by taking the checkered flag at Daytona International Speedway. The pair ran 51 laps around the 3.56-mile road course in their #11 Powell Motorsport Corvette during the two-hour race.
Starting on the pole, the #11 managed to stay in the top-three throughout the race, exchanging the lead with the #15 Motorsport Technologies Porsche TT and the #37 Phoenix American Motorsports Pontiac Firebird.
"We had a bit of a battle with the Porsche up front, but we won at the end," said Powell, who was competing in the SRS class. "It was a fantastic run. Doug did a great job, and brought the car home."
Taking second was the #43 Planet Earth Motorsport Corvette at the hands of Joe Nonnamaker and Bill Pate. Battling from a back-of-the-pack start to a third-place finish was the #37 Firebird driven by John Heinricy and Bill Lester. Heinricy earned the pole position during Thursday's qualifying, but when the team opted to start Lester in place of Heinricy, it dropped the #37 to the back of the field.
"I thought John was going to start it, since he qualified on the pole, but a few minutes before the drivers got strapped in, they told me to put my helmet on and get in. But changing drivers made us go from the pole spot to 62nd place at the start, so I had to be careful and work my way through the traffic," Lester said. "When I turned the car over to John at the second full course yellow, it was in fifth place."
The GS class was won by the #88 DG Racing Mustang Cobra R at the hands of Greg Meindl and John Shreiner finishing 50 laps. Mike Keravich III and Jason Potter captured the ST class in the #77 Power Team Racing Acura Integra R, finishing on lap 49. The C2K division title went to Bryan Johnson and Pete Halsmer in the #69 Honda of American Racing Team Honda Civic SI, finishing on lap 48.
