SCC: Friday at the Glen notes

Watkins Glen, NY (June 20, 2003) -- David Donohue posted the fastest time in practice for Sunday's Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen Friday, turning a fast lap of 112.038 mph in the No. 58 Brumos Racing Porsche Fabcar. The morning's practice session marked the first appearance for the new Daytona Prototypes class at Watkins Glen International.

The second-generation driver will be one of the favorites when the field for Sunday's event will be set in qualifying Saturday at 12:45 up.m. Donohue, however, was not optimistic about his challenge.

"Winning the pole is a big motivator for the guys," Donohue said. "But I think it's going to be tough to win it here. We've been quickest in practice, but when qualifying comes, Terry (Borcheller) really turns the wick up."

Donohue won the most recent Rolex Series event at Fontana, California, and will be teamed with Mike Borkowski and Indy Car veteran Scott Goodyear for the race. Borcheller, who won at Birmingham, Alabama, in May, will drive with Forest Barber and Didier Theys in the No. 54 Bell Motorsports Chevrolet Doran.

Other top contenders include NASCAR Winston Cup driver Geoffrey Bodine, teamed with Darren Law and Andy Lally in the No. 8 95.1/The NerVe BMW Picchio, and two-time 2003 Rolex Series winners Hurley Haywood, J.C. France and Chris Dyson in the No. 59 Brumos Racing Porsche Fabcar. Haywood is the leading winner in Watkins Glen International history, with nine victories, the most recent coming in 1994.

In other action Friday, the No.12 TC Kline Racing BMW Z4 of Don Salama and Steve Pfeffer prevailed in an exciting Grand-Am Cup Sport Touring race Friday afternoon. Salama held off veteran Pete Halsmer in the No. 00 Honda of America Racing Acura RSX-S by 0.609 seconds. While Friday's practice sessions were held in dry conditions, it rained throughout the race. Both Halsmer and Sylvain Tremblay in the No. 68 SpeedSource Porsche Boxster held the lead briefly in the closing laps, but Salama managed to battle back to score the victory.

The ST II class also went down to the wire, with the No. 42 King Motorsports HRPworld.com Acura Integra LS of Joe and Wayne Nonnamaker winning over the No. 27 Bill Fenton Motorsports Acura Integra LS of Fenton, Bob Henderson and Eric Curran.

Saturday's schedule includes a 250-mile Grand-Am Cup Grand Sport race at 2:45 p.m. Randy Pobst and Michael Levitas were fastest in Friday practice with a lap of 100.860 mph on the famed 3.37-mile road circuit.
