ALTON, Va. (October 28, 2005) -- Synergy Racing announced today that Marcus Motorsport, of Richmond, Va., has purchased two Porsche 997 cars to campaign in the 2006 Grand-Am Cup Series.
"The Synergy 997 program is very impressive, and we thought it was the best choice for a competitive Grand-Am Cup entry," said Steve Marcus, owner of Marcus Motorsport. "In addition to parts availability and support at the track, we get the benefit of the strong relationship and intimate knowledge of Porsche racing that Synergy has developed over the years."
"We are looking forward to working with Marcus Motorsport next season," said Cole Scrogham, Synergy Racing co-owner. "We know what a reputable and competitive program Steve runs from racing against his team in the GT class in years past, and we believe he'll be a frontrunner again with his pair of Synergy 997 entries next season in Grand-Am Cup."
Marcus Motorsport is no stranger to Grand American racing. The team had success in the Rolex Sports Car Series GT class in years past with its BMW M3 entries. However, after a two-year absence from Grand American racing, Marcus Motorsport made the decision to switch marques and return in the 2006 Grand-Am Cup Series.
"The progress Synergy Racing has made with the Brent Martini car this season has been phenomenal, and I believe the 997's performance will only improve next year as its further developed," said Marcus. "With the talented driver lineup we will have in place for next season, I believe our Porsche 997 cars will be very competitive."
"After working with Steve to provide him with the exact car he wanted, we reevaluated our pricing structure to offer a package more specific to what is needed to race competitively," said Scrogham. "We have reduced the price of our Porsche 997 GS package to $49,430 for a complete, turnkey car that will still have trackside parts availability and $4,500 contingency package to win. This package will include everything you need to race, including the chassis modifications, Ohilins shocks, PFC brake updates, and three sets of BBS wheels."
Marcus Motorsport announced two of its four drivers slated to compete next season. Brian Cunningham will return to the team after scoring seven podium finishes with Marcus Motorsport in 2003, including a GT victory at Barber Motorsports Park, and finishing second in the GT point standings. Also with the team will be accomplished Porsche driver Spencer Pumpelly. The pair's co-driver will be announced at a later date.
Working with their sponsor Porsche of Lexington, Marcus Motorsport will take possession of their new Porsche 997 cars from the factory in the coming weeks and deliver them to Synergy Racing for preparation with its competition package. Marcus Motorsport will have their race-ready 997s later this year in time for advance testing prior to January's official preseason testing at Daytona International Speedway. The opening round of the 2006 Grand-Am Cup Series will be held in conjunction with the Rolex 24 At Daytona, January 27, 2006.
"We will have Marcus Motorsport's cars ready for some advance testing in December, but time is running out to have cars prepared in time for the Daytona test in January unless other interested car owners act now," explained Scrogham. "Steve has helped us refine our package, and we look forward to seeing his team on the podium often in 2006. If anyone else can find a better package out there, they should buy it."
About Synergy Racing
Team owners Cole Scrogham and Danny and Steve Marshall introduced Synergy
Racing in December 2004. Based at Virginia International Raceway, Synergy
Racing is an evolution of G&W Motorsports, which had catered to Porsche
racing since 1996 and became the most successful team in the Rolex Sports
Car Series with four championships, 15 class wins and more than 50 podium
finishes. The team underwent a major transformation that included a name
and logo change, as well as a complete restructuring into a
customer-based championship racing business, which concentrates on the
needs of the customer rather than the desires of the team. For more
