Team Subaru Banks on Watkins Glen Experience For Grand-Am KONI Challenge Success

When the Subaru Road Racing Team takes the green flag Saturday at the famed Watkins Glen International road course near Watkins Glen, N.Y., they will rely on thousands of miles of collective experience on the 3.4 mile track to help ease their path to the winner's circle.

The 2 ½ hour race Saturday at 4:45pm features both classes in the thriving Grand-Am KONI Challenge series for race cars with their genesis on the production lines. The four Subaru factory team drivers in a pair of Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec.B cars prepared by ICY/Phoenix of Phoenixville, Pa., will be competing against a field of 45 entrants made up of a series record eight other manufacturers in order to record their second straight win.

Chuck Hemmingson, Des Moines Ia., and co-driver Kris Skavnes, Sparta, N.J., won the most recent race, visibly aided by Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system when a heavy thunderstorm hit the Mid-Ohio circuit. The team's two wins in the 2007 season were on dry tracks.

"That was our team's first road course pro race with any significant rainfall, and we certainly capitalized with benefit from our Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive System," said James Han, Motorsports Marketing Manager for Subaru of America, Inc. "Our two previous victories from last year occurred on dry track conditions. Going into the Watkins Glen round, it's certainly confidence-inspiring knowing that our Legacy race cars are capable of winning in both the wet and dry."

Hemmingson and Skavnes have four Watkins Glen professional racing wins between them while team co-principals David Rosenblum, Langhorne, Pa., and Joe Aquilante, Chester Springs, Pa., have won multiple Watkins Glen races as car owners.

Rosenblum will share the team's second Subaru Legacy in the #141 car with 21-year old Andrew Aquilante, son of Joe Aquilante. Both Andrew and his father have won SCCA Club Racing events at Watkins Glen.

Subaru currently sits third in a list of nine manufacturers battling for the series Manufacturer Championship. Only seven points separates Hemmingson and Skavnes from the Driver Championship points lead after four races.
