Speedsource & Mears Motor Coach to Unveil New Daytona Prototype at the Glen
Sunrise, Florida, June 2, 2004 - The SpeedSource Race Engineering team and Mears Motor coach have been working with Riley Technologies to bring a new Daytona Prototype to the track. After a one race hiatus from the Grand American Rolex Series, SpeedSource will return to the series with a Pontiac powered Riley Daytona Prototype for the Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen race. The #9 Mears Motor Coach sponsored entry will also unveil a new paint scheme when it arrives at Watkins Glen, NY on June 18th.
The car will be driven by experienced Daytona Protoype drivers, Paul Mears, Mike Borkowski, and Sylvain Tremblay. Mears has been a member of the SpeedSource team since 1999 scoring the 2002 Grand Am Cup Grand Sport Rising Star of the Year Award. Borkowski joined the team in 2003 and is well versed in many series including IRL and NASCAR Nextel Cup.
Tremblay, who owns the SpeedSource Race Engineering effort, will be joining the two co-drivers for the six hour Glen race only. Tremblay is the 2001 Grand Am Cup Grand Sport Driver Champion and has 19 professional wins to his name, not including Canadian Motorola Cup wins.
The Tremblay owned SpeedSource effort has sixteen professional wins and nearly forty professional podiums. Team owner Sylvain Tremblay feels that the team is now poised to duplicate that success in the Grand American Daytona Prototype Class with this new package. In the first four races of the 2004 Grand American Rolex season the Riley chassis has won two races while the Pontiac powerplant has brought home three wins.
"We are looking forward to returning to Watkins Glen for a classic six hour sprint race," commented Tremblay. "The Riley appears to be the strongest car in the class. The Pontiac motor looks very strong. Mears Motor Coach sponsorship made it possible to move forward with this package and I am very anxious to hit the track at Watkins Glen.
"We plan on having two strong days of testing next week at VIR," added Tremblay. "Riley has been helpful in giving us insight into the base package to start out with. Now we have to start working on tuning the car to Paul and Mike's driving style."
