Bob Akin Award all comes down to 1000 km race for Team Sahlen's Nonnamaker
A 1000 km ROLEX Grand American race at Miller Motorsports Park will determine the 2007 GT class Bob Akin Sportsman Award winner.
Over the 13 race season, the Award has come down to two drivers - Emil Assentato of SpeedSource and Joe Nonnamaker of Team Sahlen
Both Sportsman drivers have competed against each other for years. But this season marks the first time the two have come head to head for an Award.
Joe Nonnamaker will be driving Team Sahlen's #43 HRPWorld.com Corvette. He will be sharing the driving duties with his two sons - Wayne and Will Nonnamaker
Ironically, Joe's son Will won the inaugural Bob Akin Award in 2005. This is a strange twist of fate as father is pursuing success after his son. Last year's champion was Marc Bunting, who incidentally finished 2nd to Will in the 05 Akin Award.
"I have been working out extra hard at home on my exercises to be ready for this long event. The crew has put extra focus ensuring we have excellent reliability. It will be very important to ensure we finish this race to be able to capture this award." - states Joe Nonnamaker
Team Sahlen will be entering the #42 HRPWorld.com Corvette with Joe Sahlen, who will be accompanied by Wayne and Will Nonnamaker. The #42 has the distinction in 2007 of posting the top Corvette finish in Rolex GT with a 6th place at Iowa Speedway.
"Our goal for the #42 is to end the year with a podium. It will be a difficult feat to accomplish, but we are going to try our best to make the run." - states Will Nonnamaker
The 1000 km race at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah will be televised on SPEED TV on September 15th starting at 1 pm.
