Tough Day At The Races

Danville, VA (April 24, 2010) - Not all race weeks go quite as planned. Randy traveled to Virginia International Raceway Thursday planning to race in both the GRAND-AM Rolex and Continental Tire series races. Things were about to change. Due to a commitment with another series, Randy was not able to participate in the Rolex race with the Stevenson Motorsports Camaro as had been previously announced. Disappointed but understanding commitment, Randy focused his energy on the #27 Freedom Autosport MAZDASPEED3 in Saturday's Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Street Tuner race. Co-driver Eric Foss qualified the car in third and stayed near the front until an early stop to top off the fuel. Eric was able to catch back up to the front after the next yellow when the other teams also pitted for fuel. Late in his stint, Eric had shifting issues which led to engine problems and the team was forced to retire the car in twenty-fourth place. Randy never was able to get in the car.

"Its a shame. It was tough going from two races to no races. I was disappointed that I couldn't race with Stevenson Motorsports again, but it just didn't work out. I want to thank Stevenson for their offer and their willingness and cooperation to solve the situation. Hopefully in the future we can work together again."

"We are clearly making progress with the MAZDASPEED3. Eric qualified very well once again. The handling was better and continued to improve as the race went on. We were excited at the potential for rain which would have suited our Mazda, but it only passed close by. We made an early pit stop, as was our strategy since we do not yet have the fuel range of our competitors. The next yellow put us back up front when the other teams pitted, so that worked out. Eric was running well, in spite of mysteriously weak brakes, when he got in a little trouble on a downshift which damaged the engine and we had to retire."

"This weekend was tough for Freedom Autosport overall. One car was destroyed in a big crash while near the front (driver okay, no worries)and another one, also in contention, lost an engine. There was great potential that never materialized. Ever the optimist, I know that next race it will. I am very happy to be part of this project."

"I would like to thank my friends Anita Sangi and Dennis Ponton for opening their home to me for the weekend. I would also like to thank my personal sponsors WeatherTech, ChaseCam, saferacer.com, Team Janica Racing and Prairie Hills Motorsport Club for their continued support this season."
