David Wall Wins GT Championship

New South Welshman, David Wall, has today secured his place in Australian motorsport history by winning the 2009 Australian GT Championship.

David's weekend got off to the best possible start, qualifying in pole position in his Porsche GT3 997 Cup S for the final round of the Australian GT Championship at the Sydney Telstra 500.

After setting the fastest lap time in Friday practice, David secured pole position with a lap that saw him jump to the top of the times with just minutes remaining in the session.

At the start of race one David went side by side with Max Twigg into the first corner with David coming out in the lead. Twigg pushed David hard and he was forced to concede the position on lap 8. With his lights blazing David fought to take back the place but was not able to get there.

David came home in second place, taking out the 2009 Australian GT Championship.

In addition to the restrictions David was already running, he picked up an additional 55kgs for the second race this weekend, the final race of the year.

Starting the rolling start in 2nd place, David dropped back to 3rd by the first corner and had Tony Quinn's Aston Martin right behind him.

Whilst David was struggling for power on long straights, he was able to make up a lot of time through the tighter corners. Unfortunately Quinn was able to pull up alongside and sail past on the straight. David fought back and got took back 3rd place, but was not able to hold the powerful Aston Martin behind him.

David fought hard to hold his position, coming home in 4th place and picking up 3rd overall for the weekend.

The 3rd place for the round meant that David impressively finished on the podium in every round this year, with his 4th place today the only race he has finished off the podium.

David was over the moon to win the championship, especially in front of his sponsor Payce.

"I am so pleased to be able to bring home the Championship on the door step of Payce's development at the waterfront precinct in Homebush Bay," David said.

"Their support over the last five years has been invaluable. It is also fantastic to reward my new sponsor, All Workshop Services, with a Championship win in their first round.

"This year has been an absolute dream for me and the team. It could not have been better!

"The whole team has done an incredible job, but particularly my engineer Steve Williams -- this Championship is as much his as it is mine.

"Likewise my family; my mum, my dad and my wife Amy have supported me throughout my motorsport career. This championship win is for them as well."

As a result of winning the Championship, David has been invited to the Porsche Motorsport Awards to be held in the new Porsche museum in Stuttgart, Germany on Friday.
