USRRC TO JOIN FORCES WITH FIA GT FOR HOMESTEAD AND LAGUNA

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (May 1, 1998) — The United States Road Racing Championship has been awarded the organizational agreement for the FIA GT's only visits to North America, scheduled for the Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex, October 17-19, and Laguna Seca Raceway, October 23-25. The USRRC will also provide the other races for each weekend. The autumn weekends mark the final two contests for the 1998 FIA GT Championship, the European GT series standard, from which the USRRC's GT Championship is largely based. The 10-race championship travels to Germany, England, France, Hungary, Japan and Austria in addition to the final two rounds stateside. "Working with the FIA is an important step in the growth of the USRRC and its stature as North America's premier sports car racing championship," said Robert Snodgrass, USRRC Chairman of the Board. "Last year's North American FIA GT rounds were quite a success, and we're confident that the new association between the USRRC and the FIA, and the line-up of support races forthcoming, will provide an outstanding entertainment value." The USRRC, which promotes the Can-Am and GT Championships, was created in October, 1997 to return sports car racing to prominence in North America. The Can-Am Championship, which was revived this year after an 11-year absence, features open-cockpit, two-seater prototype spyders driven by some of the best road racing drivers in the world. The USRRC GT Championship presents a top professional arena for manufacturers and drivers to compete in production-based sports cars. Sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing, Ltd., the Can-Am and GT Championships provide a one-two punch for North American racing fans, headlined by the Rolex 24 At Daytona.
