PTG BMW M3 Team Adds Stuck to '99 Driver Lineup

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Jan. 29, 1999: Internationally renowned veteran road racer Hans Stuck, of Austria, will drive for the championship Prototype Technology Group BMW M3 team for the 1999 season, team owner Tom Milner and BMW announced today at the Rolex 24 at Daytona. The 48-year-old Stuck, a BMW factory driver contracted by the parent company in Munich, spent last season with Team BMW Motorsport BMW V12 Le Mans program, and as a development driver for the BMW V8 racing engine. He has won championships in IMSA Supercar (1993), ADAC-Supercup (1987), Sportscar Endurance Championship (1985), Procar-Series (1979), and German Racing Ford Championship series. He is a two-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans (1986-87), and the Spa 24-Hour (1972). His history with BMW goes back to 1975, when he co-drove a BMW 3.0 CSL to seven wins and 10 poles with a list of co-drivers that included Sam Posey, Brian Redman and Allan Moffatt. "I have always loved racing in the States, and to come here and race with such a great team is not only an honor, but a pleasure," says Stuck, who is co-driving in one of to Yokohama/Flextronics Int'l/Level One BMW M3 four-doors here at this weekend's Rolex 24. "We're thrilled to have the experience and presence of the legendary Hans Stuck,' says Scott Doniger, M Brand Manager, BMW of North America, Inc. "His history in road racing, and with BMW, is well documented. We've already seen his benefit in working with our younger drivers here this weekend. We're very much looking forward to working with him this season." After this weekend's Rolex 24, the season-opening event on the 1999 United States Road Racing Championship (USRRC), the PTG BMW M3 team will focus on the eight-race American Le Mans Series sanctioned by Professional Sports Car Racing (SPORTS CAR). That season opens next month with the traditional Superflo 12 Hours of Sebring. Stuck is one of six drivers who will race the entire season for the PTG BMW M3 team. He joins Mark Simo, of Carlsbad, Calif., the 1998 SPORTS CAR GT3 driver's champion, Boris Said, of Carlsbad, Calif., Peter Cunningham, of West Bend, Wis., and PTG newcomers Brian Cunningham, of Danville, Ky., the grandson of the legendary Briggs Cunningham, and Johannes Van Overbeek, of San Francisco. "I think it is exciting that Hans will be with us for the entire season," said PTG owner Tom Milner, whose Winchester, Va.-based team has swept the last two SPORTS CAR GT3 driver's, team and manufacturer's (for BMW) championships, and last season's USRRC GT3 championships. "I've known him for a very long time. The experience he brings us will be very good for the team as we look to continue our championship run for BMW." Like this weekend, the PTG team will field a pair of its BMW M3 four-doors at Sebring next month, then will add a third car for the sprint events on the American Le Mans Series schedule.
