Watkins Glen, NY (May 16, 2001) - Watkins Glen International announced a strong field of IMSA GTP cars that will be at the track this weekend for the IMSA GTP reunion. Of the 20 cars entered, several have played a role in IMSA history and will continue their racing heritage this weekend at the historic road course.
Headlining the entry list is a 1983 Coca Cola Porsche 935, known as "The Last 935". Built by legendary chassis builder Dave Klym and once driven by Albany native and IMSA Endurance Racing Champion Bob Akin, this car finished second in its 1983 debut at Daytona's Three Hour Finale. The car was retired in 1984 and will be raced by Steve Southard this weekend.
Accompanying the Coca Cola car is a 1982 Rondeau M-382C that raced for four years at LeMans, Spa, Monza, Nurburgring and Fuji. One of only six Rondeau's made, legendary drivers such as Jean Rondeau, Henri Pascarolo, Jean Pierre Jaussaud, Vic Elford and Sam Posey all took turns piloting it. This weekend, owner and driver Steve Simpson can be found in the driver's seat.
Simpson will be busy this weekend as he brings a second entry of a 1981 Frissbee Can-Am car previously driven by Danny Sullivan, one of open wheel racing's most recognizable figures. One of only two real Frissbees, this car finished third in the IMSA points, with a win at Las Vegas in 1981.
The Sports Car Grand Prix weekend promises much excitement. Night racing comes alive as the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series compete in The Six Hours of The Glen, finishing under twilight. Fans will also be treated to an IMSA GTP reunion, U.S. F2000 and Ferrari races, topped off with a three-hour Grand-Am Cup race on Sunday.
