RML's Race Debut in Dubai

RML's sportscar team collected more points in Dubai today in the 10th round of the FIA GT Championship when Mike Newton and Tommy Erdos secured 6th position in class at the end of an intensely hot three-hour race. Chris Goodwin and Pedro Fontes were hoping for another good result after their success at Oschersleben but they met with disappointment when a fire forced them to retire with an hour of the race to go.

This was RML's race debut in Dubai and the first time the team had travelled to the Middle East. The race took place at the magnificent 5.39km Dubai Autodrome, which was also hosting its first major motorsport event, and an unexpected late start saw the chequered flag fall under darkness.

Tommy took the start of the race at the wheel of Car 7 and Pedro took his first start at the wheel of Car 8. Both drivers had a good run off the line and Tommy had climbed as high as 4th position during the first 50 minutes of the race before he pitted for Mike to take over. Pedro was also driving a strong race and had climbed up to 7th position before handing the car over to Chris.

Rejoining in 16th after a short pit delay Mike drove very strongly and climbed up to 11th position before pitting for Tommy to take his second stint. Chris also had a good run and had climbed up to 8th before Pedro once more took to the track.

With the afternoon heat still persisting both cars were running strongly and Tommy set his fastest lap of the race. He reclaimed 6th position before Mike took over for the final stint. Rejoining in 10th position Mike drove well to gain a place and cross the line in 9th, claiming 6th position in class.

Pedro had also enjoyed a strong second stint before he handed the car back to Chris. Chris's final drive was short lived however when a refuelling problem caused a fire which led to his retirement.

Chris Goodwin commented "It was disappointing not to get a result today as we came here full of optimism after our podium at Oschersleben. Having said that I have really enjoyed driving here, it is a great circuit".

Ray Mallock commented "Its been a new experience for us here in Dubai and although we didn't get the result we hoped for the team have worked really well in what has been a tough event".
