“Disappointing weekend”

Enzo Ide, the promising 20-year-old driver from West-Flanders, third in last year’s FIA GT3 European Championship, is competing in the 2012 GT World Championship with AF Corse Ferrari. The World Championship was in its sixth meeting of the season in Slovakia, and as compared to two months earlier this year the Ferrari was unable to play a leading role. With a tenth place in the qualifying race and a retirement due to a deflating tyre in the championship race, the result in Slovakia was a great disappointment. The drivers and team members of AF Corse now have a mere two weeks to prepare for the Wold Championship in Moscow for the first ever world championship race held in Russia, a première in the motorsport annals.

What with an eleventh place in the qualifying sessions, a tenth in the first race and a retirement in the main race, Enzo Ide was truly disappointed. The Slovakian weekend did not bring the hoped for points, and the complete opposite as to what had been expected before the race.

Enzo Ide: “Together with the AF Corse Ferrari team I am completely baffled. A couple of weeks ago we had already competed here and due to a reorganisation of the calendar meant that we were back here on this superb circuit. Our hopes were high, seeing we were battling it out up front, up against the German makes of Audi, Mercedes and BMW. A few weeks later and without any provable reasons, we suddenly cannot follow. It’s as though we’re playing in a sort of second division, with McLaren, Lamborghini and Ford. Incomprehensible... I repeat the fact that we cannot image the reason why, but it’s very strange.”

“I experienced a pretty difficult weekend, because having to fight it out from the back of the pack is not fun. Neither during the qualifying sessions, nor during the first race could we see ourselves clinching a top-5, let alone a podium place. At the start of the second race I went all out and took a strong start, however a light nudge and a deflating tyre, which led to a damaged suspension, meant that we had to throw in the towel early on in the race.”

Enzo Ide can now enjoy a week of rest prior to completing the following double assignment. During the first weekend of September he will be travelling to Moscow for a world première, as for the first time in the annals of motorsport, a World Championship will be held in Russia. One week later Circuit Zolder becomes the playground, where he will be defending the victory he clinched last year in the 24 Hours of Zolder. With whom or what will be made clear in the days to come.
