Historic Race Cars on Display at DAYTONA USA

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 19, 1996) -- Two of the most famous Porsche race cars ever to compete in the United States -- with a combined value of nearly $1 million -- will be on display at DAYTONA USA, "The Ultimate Motorsports Attraction," through the holiday season and the month of January.

DAYTONA USA has many significant race cars on display, but the two newest additions have a unique place in Daytona International Speedway's historical lore.

The 1983 and 1985 Rolex 24 At Daytona-winning race cars are on loan to DAYTONA USA from former Rolex 24 champion car owner Preston Henn. The No. 6 Porsche 935 Turbo was driven by Henn, Bob Wollek, Claude Ballot-Lena and A.J. Foyt to victory in the 1983 edition of the famed twice-around-the-clock endurance test. The car also holds a Daytona road course record.

The No. 8 Porsche 962 was the first of five of the sleek GTP cars to take overall winning honors in the Rolex 24. It is on display at DAYTONA USA as it was driven by Wollek, Foyt, Al Unser and Thierry Boutsen in 1985. This 962 is the last race car to carry four-time Indianapolis 500 winner and former Daytona 500 winner Foyt to victory in a major international event. Foyt won both the Rolex 24 and the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1985 driving for Henn.

Other racing vehicles currently on display are a NASB Formula USA Suzuki Superbike that will race at Daytona during Daytona 200 Week, Feb. 27-March 9; an Indy Racing League (IRL) Lola that competed in the 1992 and 1993 Indianapolis 500s; a NASCAR Craftsman Series race truck; Hoyt Overbagh's Chevrolet Camaro that competed in the 1996 Rolex 24; a sprint kart that will compete in the WKA Enduro World Championships at the Speedway Dec. 26-30; and a vintage Harley-Davidson road race motorcycle.

DAYTONA USA is open every day in December except Christmas. Western Auto's Parts America Speedway Tours run daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bring an unwrapped toy to support the Toys for Tots campaign through Dec. 23 and receive $2 off a combination DAYTONA USA and Speedway Tour ticket.
