The highlight of the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix will be the prestigious IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, making their only Canadian stop in 2016. It will be the seventh of twelve rounds, one week after the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen at Watkins Glen International.

The top sports car series in North America boasts more top manufacturers than Formula 1, NASCAR and IndyCar combined. The elite marques that will compete over the weekend include Aston Martin, BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Ford, Lamborghini, Mazda, Nissan, Porsche and Viper, plus the revolutionary Delta Wing Prototype.

Plenty of action

In addition to the WeatherTech Championship, four exciting series will also take to the 3.957 km grand prix circuit; the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, Mazda Prototype Lites presented by Cooper Tires, SCCA Pro Racing Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich and the Nissan Micra Cup.

The Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge featuring production cars specifically modified for racing will highlight the action on Saturday, July 8 with an always-competitive race from start to finish. There are several Canadian drivers chasing a win on home soil this weekend; Toronto’s Scott Maxwell and Cameron Cassels of Coldstream, Ont., both early season winners in the GS class, will be among the Canadian drivers. Joining them are Daniel Burkett of Winnipeg (GS), another Toronto native James Vance (ST), as well as Michael Valiante (ST) and Remo Ruscitti (ST), of Vancouver.

The Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix features a wide-array of fun things away from the track for fans to see and do, such as tech talks, driver meet and greets, and autograph sessions with the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship drivers. There will also be vendors selling authentic race-related merchandise. Both the WeatherTech Championship and Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge will feature Open Grid Walks, giving fans an up-close, interactive experience with the teams and drivers on track just minutes prior to the drop of the green flag.

A busy schedule

The weekend kicks off on Thursday (July 7) with a full day of testing for all series except the WeatherTech Championship, who take to the track for practice rounds on Friday (July 8). Friday’s action also includes qualifying rounds for the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge and Nissan Micra Cup. Qualifying for the WeatherTech Championship, MX-5 Cup and Mazda Prototype Lites finishes up on Saturday (July 9). The first races of the weekend also start on Saturday for the Nissan Micra Cup, Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, Mazda Prototype Lites and MX-5 Cup. Sunday (July 10) rounds out the weekend with a full day of action. The second race of their weekend doubleheaders take place for Prototype Lites, Nissan Micra Cup and the MX-5 Cup. The IMSA Weathertech SportsCar Championship will hit the track at 11:05 am for the highlight of the weekend – the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix which runs for two hours and 45 minutes.
