DeltaWing coupe to start 13th for Saturday's Endurance Classic

The DeltaWing Racing Cars team set their quickest lap of the weekend during qualifying today, with a fast time of 1:55.468 putting the revolutionary coupe into 13th position in the Prototype class for tomorrow’s Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh from Florida.

DeltaWing drivers Andy Meyrick, Katherine Legge and Gabby Chaves have steadily improved the sports car prototype's performance through each practice session. Meyrick set the quick time on his third lap in the 15-minute qualifying session for the top class in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship. While hoping for a top 10 starting spot, the team was pleased with the car’s performance and their prospects for the 12 hour endurance classic.

“We’re running a new shock system and we’ve improved the aero package, at least as much as we can within the boundaries of the car, since we can’t bolt on a high downforce package. But this car is all about efficiency and technology, not about downforce or horsepower. We need to achieve the highest place we can with the highest degree of efficiency.

“I was hoping to be a bit closer to the pole position time, but it’s a good time for us – 1:55 was really our prediction, so we’re only a few tenths off of that. So we can’t be disappointed. We’ve had a good few days testing and the car has been reliable. I would have liked to qualify in the top 10 but it’s a 12 hour race, so it’s not the end of the world.”

“We’ve had strong practice sessions and have been trouble free, so that’s the most important takeaway. We’ve put a lot of new parts on the car since Daytona, which have all run reliably and have all been a benefit. Our result in qualifying is where we expected to be, really – but that said, we should have better race pace compared to some of our rivals. The point will be to run trouble free and reliably and be in the fight in the last four hours. Between now and then, it’s all about being in that position, using our heads and being sensible.”
