Jan Magnussen: Our title race is heading to the wire

There are three races to go in the 2015 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship and the battle for the GTLM class title is certainly hotting up.

At the last race at Road America, Antonio Garcia and I managed to stretch out the lead to four points.

We’re lucky to have such a great team behind us in Corvette Racing – they know every single lap is vital and this championship could come down to the final lap at Petit Le Mans.

We have been focussed in the past couple of races of finishing in front of the No.25 BMW of Bill Auberlen and Dirk Werner but the car that is looming large is the No.911 Porsche.

They’ve won the past couple of races and will be very hard to catch again this weekend. We’ve got to keep hold of the lead or at least stay within striking distance when we get to Road Atlanta.

That race over 10 hours is really going to decide who is going to win that championship.

The way the points system works it is very hard to open a big gap, or loose a chunk of points. Consistency is so important.

At the last race at Road America everybody picked up the pace with a new tire from Michelin. It seems to have made everyone faster so there is no real advantage from one car brand to another.

Everyone was under the track record in qualifying – even the Falken guys – that just shows the intense level of development and competition in the GTLM class.

Unfinished business this weekend

This week we’re off to VIRginia International Raceway where I certainly have some unfinished business.

I didn’t get to race there last year after some oil got put down and both Richard Lietz and I crashed.

Richard went off first and unfortunately our Corvette hit his Porsche pretty hard. He ended up with a broken arm and for me – the lights went out for a little while.

I felt OK after I woke up, but GM and Corvette Racing is very serious about concussions and Jordan Taylor had to step in for me.

I can’t wait to get back in the car there because it is such a great track to race on. It is very fast and flowing with an awesome collection of corners.

It will also be great to be able to race for the overall win this week. It will be just the GTLM and GTD cars doing battle at VIR before we re-join the prototypes at Circuit of The Americas.

Great racing back home in Denmark

Last weekend at home in Denmark I managed to close on the lead for the Danish Thundersports Championship but actually dropped to third in the standings.

I ended up with a third and two second places over the weekend where we had some weather to also contend with.

It turned out to be a bit of a family feud on the weekend doing battle with my nephew Dennis Lind. He has actually passed me for second in the championship but we’re both closing on Caspar Elgaard.

Hmmm – maybe Uncle Jan gave him too many tips as a kid!

We have three weekends to go with three races each weekend so there is still plenty of opportunity to close that points gap.

I have two championships which I would love to win but I’m going to have to fight every step of the way.
