'Mixed feelings' for Al Carter at Watkins Glen

Al Carter’s Watkins Glen racing weekend brought mixed feelings to the driver from Greenville, Delaware. Entered in two different series, the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge with Rebel Rock Racing and the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship with TRG-Aston Martin Racing, Al Carter did not score the results he was expecting despite a 11th place finish in the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen.

Al’s week started on Thursday with CTSCC practice. He and Rebel Rock teammate Brett Sandberg co-driving the No. 7 B+ Foundation/Caramba Tequila/Eagle Tech Systems/Sideskinz/Stinkerz Porsche 997 finished third at the last race in Kansas so they were looking for another good top finish. In qualifying Al signed the 14th fastest GS performance of the Continental Tire 150 at the Glen 25 car GS field. On Saturday, Al and Brett felt great and they knew that the Rebel Rock racing crew prepared a good car for them to finish in the top ten. A few yards after taking the green, Al Carter was the victim of a very violent accident, the worst of his career so far. One of the Nissans spun in front of him and hit Al’s car sending the No. 7 Rebel Rock Racing Porsche flying to the wall destroying the Porsche 997. Carter was OK but the accident ruined his and Sandberg’s effort and unfortunately, like Al, Brett was not able to race and score points. The two will now have to wait until next week at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Canada (July 10-12) to rebound if their car can be repaired on time for this next CTSCC event.

Al Carter’s TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race at the Glen was better than his unfortunate Continental Tire 150 race. Following their 4th place finish at Detroit on May 31st, Al Carter and his TRG-AMR team were looking for a good performance for the No. 007 Aston Martin V12 Vantage. Last weekend at Watkins Glen International Al Carter was co-driving the No. 007 B+ Foundation/Jetset Magazine/Caramba Tequila/Eagle Tech Systems /Sideskinz/Adobe Road Winery/Royal Purple Aston Martin with James Davison and David Block. The Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen was the third round of the 2014 Tequila Patron North American Endurance Cup and the three drivers who have not raced together since Sebring were pleased to team up again for this iconic endurance event.

Al Carter’s co-driver James Davison was the fastest driver in the second session on Saturday morning and qualified 8th for the race. David Block was designated as starting driver by Kevin Buckler’s TRG-AMR team who prepared a very reliable and competitive car for the six hour race. Block took a decent start but at the end of his stint he was pushed from behind and involved in a small accident that damaged the rear of the 007 Aston Martin. He was forced to pit for repair. This unexpected incident ruined the effort of the trio of drivers since they lost five laps in the process after less than an hour in the race. Al Carter replaced Block behind the wheel and ran a mistake free competitive 2 hours and 25 minute stint, the longest of his career at that level. Following Al’s stint, David Block returned to the track for another stint then James Davison ran the last two stints. Davison was doing very well proving once again that he is one of the hot shoes of the TUDOR championship series, but because of the lost laps at the beginning of the race, the 007 could not finish higher than 11th.

The next round of the 2014 TUDOR Championship, the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix presented by Hawk Performance is set for July 10-13 at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Bowmanville, Ontario in Canada near Toronto.

The Continental Tire 150 CTSCC race will be telecast on Sunday, July 6 at 10:00 a.m. EDT on Fox Sports 1.
