Reigning champions lead Cadillac 1-2-3 in Daytona test

Action Express Racing's pair of Cadillac DPi-V.Rs unofficially topped the first day of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s test on Daytona’s road course.

#55 Mazda Motorsports Mazda DPi: Jonathan Bomarito, Tristan Nunez, Spencer Pigot
#33 Riley Motorsports Mercedes AMG GT3: Jeroen Bleekemolen, Ben Keating
#4 Corvette Racing Chevrolet Corvette C7.R: Oliver Gavin, Tommy Milner
#62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTE: Toni Vilander

Mike Conway, who will share the #31 Whelen Engineering-sponsored car with fulltime drivers and 2016 champions Dane Cameron and Eric Curran, as well as Seb Morris, set an unofficial 1min38.766sec lap late in the day to go quickest of the five Prototype.

However all three Cadillacs had their running time restricted heavily by a electronic software issue that meant neither the #31 nor the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing entry even hit the track in the morning session and instead completed short runs in the afternoon.

AXR’s other car, the #5 of Joao Barbosa, Christian Fittipaldi and Filipe Albuquerque, did however hit the track late morning and set second fastest time with its fastest of 56 laps turned.

The Mazda-Riley, running front dive-planes that weren’t shown in its original form, had its own issues, namely an overheating gearbox, and missed out on much of its potential time on track, and wound up with an unofficial time some 2.4sec off the fastest Cadillac, and 0.4 behind Visit Florida Racing’s Gibson-powered Riley.

Corvette Racing’s #3 C7.R set the fastest time in GT Le Mans, with a 1min45.442sec lap, while it was Dream Racing’s #27 Lamborghini Huracan that topped the GT Daytona class with a 1min45.957sec, set in the morning.
