Daytona Beach, Fla - We had some drama in the first hour of action at Daytona. Currently, the No. 02 Chip Ganassi Racing DP with Scott Dixon leads the race after starting third.
At the very start of the race with Tom Kimber-Smith getting turned around on the opening lap before continuing soon after. The No. 912 Porsche suffered alternator issues and lost seven laps on pit road before rejoining the race. The No. 23 GTD Porsche didn't even take the green flag with the rest of the field, ducking down pit road for a quick stop.
It's been a rough hour for both PC and P entries of the Starworks team. The main prototype's right side door kept opening and closing, failing to lock. The PC spun twice with two different drivers behind the wheel.
A disaster avoided
The scariest moment has to be when the No. 66 DP spun in the bus stop and when trying to rejoin the race, GT cars were forced to scatter around it. The Risi Ferrari made a last-second evasive maneuver to avoid slamming into the DP, but still clipped the rear, causing some damage but a potential catastrophe was avoided.
The No. 009 TRG-AMR Aston (starting with different driver) and No. 98 Aston (speeding) both were handed penalties by race officials.
There was a sketchy moment when Nick Tandy decided to go after Oliver Gavin for the lead in the tri-oval, going onto the apron and touching the Corvette before backing off.
As the hour came to a close, the No. 45 Flying Lizard Audi spun and stopped on the apron in NASCAR's turn three, causing the first full-course caution.
