On fresh tyres, Newey made a perfect start to lead the race, as battle commenced between Ralf Aron, Joey Mawson and Schumacher for second.

Aron had the position in his grasp, while Schumacher tried his best to pass Mawson. The two came together after the first safety car period, when Mawson kissed the rear of Aron's car.

That allowed Schumacher to close up to Mawson, but the two collided turning onto the long straight, with the Australian going across the gravel and dropping down to eighth.

Schumacher continued to mount pressure on Aron and attempted a move on the Estonian at Turn 3, but overshot the corner and allowed Aron back through.

While the two battled, Drugovich made an opportunistic move to get ahead of both his rivals and move up to second.

There was mayhem a lap later however, when Schumacher dived up the inside of Aron and made contact with Drugovich, who turned in across the German's bows.

It ended the race for both drivers, and left Schumacher visibly frustrated. The son of seven-time F1 champion Michael is under investigation for both the incidents.

Up ahead, Newey claimed his first win of the weekend from Aron and Mawson, who recovered from his earlier moment to extend his lead in the championship.

The race was neutralised with the safety car until the last lap, as Pedro Cardoso finished fourth and Kimi Schramm equalled his best result of the season with fifth.

Behind, Rinus van Kalmthout completed a positive weekend in sixth, ahead of Yoshiaki Katayama, Dylan Young, Manuel Maldonado and Pavan Ravishanker.

UPDATE: The stewards decided not to penalise any driver involved in the two separate incidents.
