The fifth round of the MRF MMSC FMSCI Indian National Racing Championship is sure to see some exciting racing. It is the final round of the four-wheeler racing championship and Reddy and Sandeep are sure to be giving it all they have as the stakes are high.

Reddy leads the championship standings with 147 after four rounds and with three races to be run at the Madras Motor Race Track in Chennai this weekend.

Reddy has been in fine form this season and has notched six wins out of 10 races. He appears to be the favourite to win the title.

However, one cannot discount the talent of Sandeep Kumar. Being second in the championship with 102.5 points, the Chennai driver definitely has a chance to clinch the title.

Another Chennai driver, Chetan Korada, is in third place with 90.5 points. Though he has a mathematical chance of winning the title, it will be very difficult considering that Reddy and Sandeep are going to be tough to beat.

Luckily, the weather is clear in Chennai and the full track length of 3.74Km is being used. Rain had disrupted racing activities of late and the short loop of 2.1Km was used.

The added incentive for clinching the MRF F1600 title is that the champion will get a ticket to the Mazda Road To Indy shootout later this year.

The other categories that will see competition this weekend are the Formula LGB 1300, Indian Touring Cars and Volkswagen Ameo Cup.

The Indian Junior Touring Cars, Super Stock and Esteem Cup will all run on a combined grid. There will be three races this weekend.

For next year, the organisers of the National Championship are planning to have combined grids in the single-seater and saloon car categories.

MMSC's Vicky Chandhok explained the idea behind the planned change. "We decided on combined grids from the next season to make the races more competitive. The spectators would get to see more overtaking on the track," he said.

“The ITC and Ameo Cup cars are almost on par on pace. That should make for some exciting racing and overtaking when run concurrently.

The MRF 1600 and the Formula LGB 1300 will also run on combined grid. We may also combine more classes to give spectators more of what they want plus give drivers new challenges.

“The MMRT has an FIA International license that permits the track to have up to 42 starters. We intend to use that from next year.

It's time for big changes to make it a more exciting spectacle,” he added.
