Chennai MRF F1600: Tharani beats Rangasamy to pole

Karthik Tharani clinched pole position for the second round of MRF F1600 in Chennai, beating Raghul Rangasamy to the fastest lap in qualifying.

During the 15-minute session, Rangasamy was the first driver to break the 1m40s barrier, setting an initial benchmark of 1m39.641s.

Soon after, Tharani deposed Rangasamy from the top of the timesheets with a time of 1m39.639s, before pulling further clear with a 1m39.496s lap.

With the Mahabalipuran-born driver unable to improve his laptime, Tharani will start the first race of the weekend from pole position.

Behind the leading duo, practice pacesetter Sandeep Kumar grabbed third spot on the grid with a time of 1m39.708s.

Former Vento and National Racing Championship Anindith Reddy was unable to keep up to pace with the top three runners, despite a promising start to the qualifying session.

The Hyderabad-based driver will start Race 1 from fourth on the grid, ahead of Chetan Korada and rookie Arya Singh.

Siddharth Trivellore was seventh fastest in the session, while 2016 Vento Championship Ishaan Dodhiwala trailed home in eighth place.

Antony George and Jai Sampath completed the Top 10.
