Chennai MRF: Martono beats Drugovich to final pole
Indonesia’s Presley Martono set the pace in the final qualifying session of the 2017/18 MRF Challenge season, beating title favourite Felipe Drugovich to pole position in Chennai.
Drugovich laid the early benchmark by clocking the Madras Motor Race Track in 1m31.484s, but saw himself slip down the order as times began to tumble.
Both Pavan Ravishankar and Martono bettered his laptime, before France’s Louis Gachot became the first driver to break the 1m31s barrier.
Rinus van Kalmthout then took over the top spot in the timesheets with a time of 1m30.628s, only to be displaced by Martono’s breathtaking flyer of 1m30.323s.
Martono’s time would prove uneaten in the second half of the session, but he still managed to make a late improvement to cement his position at the top of the timesheets.
The Indonesian driver’s pole time of 1m30.017s was 0.360s quicker than Drugovich, who himself made up a place with a jump from third to second in the charts.
Van Kalmthout ended up third, another tenth behind the leading duo, while Julien Falchero and Ravinshankar completed the top five.
Danial Frost finished just 0.005s behind the Singaporean, but ahead of Louis Gachot and Alex Karkosik.
Harri Jones was classified ninth, while the top 10 was completed by Henning Enqvist.
