Mandody outduels Prasad to win JK Tyre LGB crown

Chittesh Mandody clinched the 2017 JK Tyre LGB F4 title despite a low-key showing in the season finale at the Buddh International Circuit.

Mandody arrived in Greater Noida with a healthy 13-point lead over defending champion and chief rival Vishnu Prasad, with 30 points on offer across the final three races.

The Avalanche Racing driver endured a difficult weekend, mustering only a single podium finish and retiring from one of the races. However, with Prasad unable to take advantage of the situation, Mandody was still able to secure the drivers’ crown.

Story of the season

The first round of the season couldn’t be of more contrast to the season finale as far as Mandody’s performance was concerned. The  Kohlapur-based driver put on a dominant display of pace, winning all three races to secure a clean sweep.

Prasad played second fiddle behind Mandody, but scored podium in each of the three races to stay within touching distance of him in the standings.

One would have expected Mandody to put on a similar show in Round 2, given it was also held at Coimbatore’s Kari Motor Speedway.

And while the Avalanche Racing driver did win the first race of the weekend, a 15th and seventh place result in the remaining races allowed Prasad - who scored one victory and a second place - to equal him in the points standing.

Round 3 of the championship saw another twist in the tale. While Mandody enjoyed a praiseworthy weekend with one victory and two-top five finishes, Prasad struggled, with a DNF in Race 2 proving particularly costly.

Coming into the final round, both Mandody and Prasad had their fair share of troubles. While the former lost a huge chunk of points in Round 2, it was Round 3 where Prasad fell behind his title rival in the championship fight.

Neither of the two were able to win races in the final round of the championship where Sandeep Kumar stole the headlines with a double victory.

In the end, Mandody’s dominant display in first round proved to be the key to his championship.

Interestingly, Kumar's performance in the last round allowed him to leapfrog Prasad in the final standings. Not only that, the Dark Don Racing driver ended just two points behind Mandody after the latter retired from the final race.
