Arunachal INRC: Ghosh inherits win after Gill's retirement
Mahindra Adventure’s Amittrajit Ghosh claimed his first victory of the 2018 Indian National Rally Championship season in Rally of Arunachal after long-time leader Gaurav Gill suffered a shock late retirement.
Championship leader Gill held a comfortable 1m31.8s lead after Leg 1 and extended his advantage further by topping the first stage of Sunday.
However, his Mahindra Super XUV500 developed a mechanical issue just 700m from the finish of SS6, ruling him out of the event.
That opened up a frantic fight for top honours, with Gill’s teammate Ghosh securing a narrow 5.9s win over Phalguna Urs.
Ghosh was hamstrung by power issues in Saturday’s first stage and was running behind Urs, but staged a heroic comeback to maintain Mahindra’s unbeaten record in 2018.
Urs, however, did enough to secure the top spot in INRC2 class as he beat Karna Kudur by 57.5s. Both were driving a Volkswagen Polo.
Dean Mascarenas won in the INRC3 class and finished third in the overall standings, one place ahead of Kudur.
Rahul Kanthraj finished fifth overall and fourth in INRC2 class.
