Chikmagalur INRC: Gill leads by 0.4s after Day 1

Gaurav Gill holds a slender lead in the Chikmagalur round of the Indian National Rally Championship following the Super Special Stage on Friday.

The Mahindra Adventure driver clocked a time of 2m34.7s during the 2.5km run at the Amber Valley School, pipping teammate Amittrajit Ghosh by just 0.4s in his factory-run Super XUV500.

Gill has a strong fan-following among the locals in Chikmagalur and won both the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship events near the coffee estate between 2016-17.

Behind the leading Mahindra duo, Karna Kudur holds the third overall spot in his customer Volkswagen Polo, 1.4s down on Gill’s benchmark.

He comfortably leads the INRC2 class from Younus Ilyas, who was driving a Mitsubishi, with Phalguna Urs further behind in the rankings.

Meanwhile, Dhruva Chandrasekar was fastest among the INRC3 contingent and fourth in the overall standings, less than a second clear of defending class champion Dean Mascarenas.

Both were driving rally-spec Volkswagen Polos.

The Coffee Day India Rally, as it is officially called for sponsorship reasons, continues on Saturday with six special stages. The rally will conclude on Sunday when competitions will cover three special stages in reverse direction.
