DE PHILLIPPI WINS SECOND STRAIGHT STAR MAZDA RACE IN SEASON OPENER

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (March 28, 2011) – It took a while but Connor De Phillippi won his second straight Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear race when he got to the front early and won Round 1 of the 2011 national championship chase.

De Phillippi won the final race of the 2010 season about six months earlier and had to wait that long for his chance to win again.

Goodyear is the exclusive tire provider for Star Racing, which includes the national championship as well as regional tours and the Expert Series for drivers aged 30 and above. The Star Mazda cars are open cockpit, single-seat racers that are highly developed. The series has become a major stepping stone for driver development in open wheel racing and the cars are matched with Goodyear Eagle radials. The series competes on roads courses and ovals and the tires were developed specifically for the Star Mazda cars.

De Phillippi started the St. Petersburg race on the second row. He took the lead after the second restart of the event. Once he got ahead, he stayed there.

Martin Scuncio was second, followed by Tristan Vautier, Patrick McKenna and Chris Miller.

J.W. Roberts was the top finishing driver in the Expert Class.
