(Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin) Saturday, August 25, 2003 -- With a SPEED CHANNEL in-car camera onboard sporting the MAZDASPEED and Mazda's ZERO TIME EVENT logos, Jamie Bach put on quite a show during this weekend's STAR MAZDA SERIES event at Road America. Unfortunately, the race's last four laps were run under a full course caution, ending Bach's charge to the front.
Bach started on the front row, in second spot, next to fellow rookie Michael McDowell. This is the second time this season the Bach and McDowell duo have shared the front row, the first time being in the season opener at Sebring International Raceway. Bach scored the front row starting spot with a blistering lap late in the 45 minutes qualifying session to steal the other front tow starting spot from series point leader Luis Schiavo.
On the opening lap, Bach was pinched off the track in turn one and again in the back section of the track...and came around to complete lap one in fourth place. From then on, Bach was on a mission. He stole third place from Tim Jennings on lap three and set his sites on leaders Schiavo and McDowell out front. Bach turned a blistering lap...almost near his flying lap of qualifying...in his charge toward the leaders.
Bach tracked down Schiavo and McDowell and the three cars became a freight train around Road America's historic four miles. Unfortunately, that his how it would end...as multiple incidents involving other drivers around the circuit forced a full course yellow that would bring out the Pace Car for the final four laps. The third place finish puts Bach solidly in the top ten in the North American Championship points race and close enough to still take a strike at the front spots in the 2003 series and Rookie-of-the-Year standings. Only the Mazda Raceway event September 5-7and the Petit LeMans event in Atlanta remain on the season schedule.
As will be the case with all STAR MAZDA SERIES events, the Road America round will be televised on SPEED CHANNEL Saturday, September 13 at 9 p.m. CENTRALTIME. The next television broadcast on September 6 at 10 p.m. CENTRAL TIME will feature the Mosport Round of the North American Championship series from mid-August.

"We were really glad to be back at Road America. Our last visit here went very well as we won the June Sprints at the drop of the checker. Ron Roland of R Sport and Guy Cosmo have been a tremendous help in setting up the car and working on our driving...we looked forward to seeing some great results here over the span of this event and we sure made a run at it. We had really hoped it would go back to green, but with cars in unsafe spots...it was the right decision to end under caution. Obviously, Road America is a very historic and special place for my family and I and it is a place where we hope to racing much, much more as we continue to seek to be part of the American LeMans Series in a 675 class program. Obviously we have business to do in the Formula Mazda over the final two events of the season and we are really hoping for two great runs. The car has been great over the last two events and we have really worked on race set-up. Hopefully that will pay off and we will be running up front with a great chance at a win before the season ends."
