Jamin doubles up at Mid-Ohio

Nico Jamin cemented his reputation as crown prince of Mid-Ohio, by scoring his second win of the day in Pro Mazda, making it five-out-of-five victories stretching back to his three in USF2000 last year.

From pole, Jamin’s Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing machine didn’t make a brilliant start, and there was some wheel rubbing with fellow front-row starter Aaron Telitz down at Turn 2, the Keyhole corner, in order to defend his lead.

That cost them both momentum, which briefly allowed Juncos Racing’s Will Owen into the lead, but a pass around the outside at Turn 6 meant Jamin reasserted his authority by the end of the lap. Meanwhile, Telitz fell back to fourth behind championship rival and Team Pelfrey teammate Pato O’Ward.

On the next lap, O’Ward was pressuring Owen for second as Jamin pulled out a two-second lead. However, on Lap 7, rain started falling, and O’Ward initially appeared on the cusp of tripping over Owen’s rear wing but instead tripped over his own ambition, sliding wide and allowing Telitz back into third on Lap 9.

Behind this, Juncos Racing’s Nicolas Dapero fared even worse, spinning and stalling, which brought out the full course caution. It remained out as the race organizers allowed the track to dry, and the race recommenced on Lap 15, with 13min30sec of the 40-minute race to go.

At the green, Telitz made a bold move to jump past Owen and even threaten Jamin, while his teammate O’Ward temporarily dropped back behind the second Juncos car of Jake Parsons, a position he resolved with some brave side-by-side driving through Turns 5 and 6.

But the following lap, Owen stole the show again, by starting a pass on Telitz for second at Keyhole, and finally completing it around the outside of Turn 4.

A lap later, Owen tried to replicate the move on Jamin, which didn’t work but he held on to claim second at the finish, after 24 laps.

O’Ward failed to make Telitz crack and relinquish third place, and instead hung back and then set fastest lap on the penultimate lap to gain a bonus point.

TJ Fischer brought the third Pelfrey car home in sixth, while Parsons slowed dramatically four laps from home and pitted. He was classified seventh, behind National class driver Bobby Eberle, but ahead of the restarted Nicolas Dapero.
