Team Pelfrey dominates Pro Mazda testing, Lloyd tops USF2000

Three sessions each for Mazda Road To Indy’s two most junior categories at Barber Motorsports Park saw Team Pelfrey dominate the combined times in Pro Mazda while two teams squabbled over P1 in USF2000.

It took Mexico’s Pato O’Ward just five laps in the third and final Sunday session to nail fastest time of the day with a 1m20.7448s around the 2.38-mile course in Alabama.

That put him at the head of the Pelfrey trio, 0.1735 quicker than Pro Mazda rookie Aaron Telitz’s fastest time which came from the first session, and Weiron Tan who was a further 0.25 sec adrift.

Three of Juncos Racing’s quartet were next up, with Garett Grist heading rookie Nicolas Dapero and Will Owen. In session two, Grist and Owen had given Juncos a 1-2 on the timesheets.

Jake Eidson was fastest for Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing, with teammate and USF2000 reigning champion Nico Jamin in ninth overall.

Eleven Pro Mazdas were in action today. Testing continues tomorrow.

USF2000

Pabst Racing emerged on top by a relatively decisive margin of 0.2sec, thanks to the efforts of Jordan Lloyd, who comes from the same town – Toowoomba – as 2014 IndyCar champion Will Power.

The Aussie was first, fourth and third across the three sessions, his fastest time coming from that first session with 1min24.1663sec. Pelfrey’s Jordan Cane in P2 was best rookie and also set his best time in session 1. By contrast, Parker Thompson of Cape Motorsports with WTR set his best in Session three, and it was this lap that lifted him to third fastest in the combined times.

Yufeng Luo was fourth overall in another Pabst entry, while Ayla Agren from Norway was fifth for John Cummiskey Racing.

Like Pro Mazda, the 18 USF2000 cars will remain at Barber for three more test sessions tomorrow.
