Helio Castroneves has secured pole position for tonight’s Iowa Corn 300 for the Verizon IndyCar Series.

Castroneves’s two lap average of 183.480 miles per hour was less than a tenth of a second faster than second place Tony Kanaan’s average of 183.125 miles per hour.

Following the all-Brazilian front row, Indianapolis 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya was third, Scott Dixon was fourth with Simon Pagenaud and Will Power making the top six an all Penske and Ganassi affair.

Marco Andretti was the fastest Honda in eighth position just ahead of defending Iowa race winner Ryan Hunter-Reay.

Bourdais crashes

The biggest moment in qualifying was a spin by last week’s winner at Milwaukee Sebastien Bourdais. Bourdais lost control of his car exiting turn two, lightly hitting the wall with the left rear of his car. The left rear bumper pod did not survive the impact but the rest of the car did, allowing Bourdais to complete his run with a two lap average of 59.243 miles per hour before his time and speed were deleted for having a yellow flag during his run.

"I think it's pretty self explanatory, just loose, I was loose on the out lap and did as much as I could with the tools to protect ourselves from that but it wasn't enough and just, car got away from us on the bump.”

"I think they're just going to change the rear cell, the bumper/rear wing which was the assembly for qualifying anyway so it doesn't really matter, just put [the car] back on the pads, make sure that everything's straight and go from there,” Bourdais said.
