Sebastien Bourdais held on to win in Detroit, leading Honda drivers Takuma Sato and Graham Rahal by nearly two seconds at the finish. This stands as the French driver's 33rd career win.

With just six laps remaining in the race, the red flag was waved as officials tried to give fans a green run to the checkered flag. The red flag followed back-to-back accidents where teammates collided. Team Penske's Will Power and Helio Castroneves collided, finishing 18th and 19th. Just before that, Charlie Kimball pushed Ganassi teammate Scott Dixon off the track and into a tire barrier.

A total of seven full-course cautions slowed the progress of the race. The grid was set by entrant points, putting Juan Pablo Montoya on pole. Despite leading a number of laps and running second late in the going, strategy caught up to the Indy 500 champion as he fell back to tenth. He maintains the championship lead with 21 points between him and Power.

“It’s a heck of a feeling after yesterday’s debacle when we couldn’t get it more wrong. The strategy, the pit stops, the fuel management, the guys did everything right and I couldn’t be happier for them,” said Bourdais, who started ninth."
