5 Races, 5 Winners

CART Online (May 14, 1998) -- When Greg Moore (Player's/Indeck Reynard Mercedes) took the checkered flag at Sunday's Rio 400, he became the fifth different winner in as many FedEx Championship Series events this season. It marked only the fourth time in CART history that a season has started with five different winners.

This year's previous winners have been Michael Andretti (Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Swift Ford) at Homestead, Adrian Fernandez (Tecate/Quaker State/Labatt Reynard Ford) at Japan, Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) at Long Beach, and Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard Honda) at Nazareth.

Previous FedEx Championship Series seasons have begun with different winners in 1987, '91 and '95. The 1987 season began with Mario Andretti's victory at Long Beach, followed by wins by Roberto Guerrero at Phoenix, Al Unser at Indianapolis, Michael Andretti at Milwaukee and Bobby Rahal at Portland.

John Andretti started the 1991 season with a victory at Australia, followed by Al Unser Jr. at Long Beach, Arie Luyendyk at Phoenix, Rick Mears at Indianapolis and Michael Andretti at Milwaukee.

The 1995 season opened with Jacques Villeneuve winning at Miami, followed by Paul Tracy at Australia, Robby Gordon at Phoenix, Unser Jr. at Long Beach and Emerson Fittipaldi at Nazareth.

The FedEx Championship Series record for most different winners to start a season is six, set in 1991, when Fittipaldi followed Michael Andretti's victory at Milwaukee with a win at Detroit, after which Andretti won at Portland for his second victory of the season.
