1999 race

Bryan Herta (Shell Ford Reynard) captured the Honda Grand Prix of Monterey's Shell 300 from the pole position for the second consecutive year and helped the FedEx Championship Series establish a new single-season record for different race winners when he drove to victory at Laguna Seca Raceway in 1999. Herta became the 10th different winner in 17 events, eclipsing the former mark of nine established in 1985 and equaled in 1995. He led all 83 laps, becoming the first Champ Car driver to accomplish that feat since Paul Tracy in 1994, en route to a 1.825-second victory over Roberto Moreno (Big Kmart Ford Swift) of Newman/Haas Racing, whose runner-up performance was a career-best finish. Max Papis (Miller Lite Ford Reynard) made it an outstanding day for Team Rahal by taking third place, also a career-best finish. Target Chip Ganassi Racing driver Juan Montoya, who entered the weekend with the FedEx Championship Series points lead, finished eighth and extended his advantage to 199-171 over Dario Franchitti (KOOL Honda Reynard) of Team KOOL Green, who went scoreless. Paul Tracy (KOOL Honda Reynard), Franchitti's Team KOOL Green teammate, finished fourth and stood third in the championship with 134 points.
