Twenty-eight drivers and seventeen race teams arrive in Long Beach, California this week for the second round of the 2001 FedEx Championship Series. After a four week gap since the season opener in Monterrey, Mexico, it will be the first US race this season and one of the most prestigious and glamorous events of the Champ Car calendar. Retaining the layout of last year's race, the 1'1 turn, 1.W mile temporary street circuit won by Paul Tracy in 2000, promises to bring close, exciting racing for the 2(30,00CI spectators expected trackside and the worldwide television audience estimated at 60 million people.

Brazil's Cristiano da Matta took victory for Newman Haas Racing in the first round of the Championship last month and will be looking to build on his winning start at Long Beach. In this Series, the most competitive International open wheel championship in the world, da Matta knows that all of his 2 1 rivals are serious contenders for race wins and podium finishes. I' "We were able to get the season off to a good start by winning in Mexico and I think it will only get better after we get a few races under our belts together." says da Matta. "My expectations are good for Long Beach. We have had good off-season tests in Sebring [Fla.] which is a bumpy track, too, and the same kind of rough circuit as we have at Long Beach. So, I would imagine that we are going to have a good competitive car there. It is tough to know how competitive we are going to be because the way the series is today, it is so competitive that you get to the racetrack and don't know if you are going to be top-five or top-20, so there is always this question mark".

Europe is well represented in the FedEx Championship Series, with drivers from Italy, France, Germany, UK, Sweden, and Spain. Dario Franchitti from Scotland is in his fifth year of the FedEx Championship Series and is one of the title favourites this season. Franchitti spent his race break visiting family in the UK and a first visit to the Rockingham Motor Speedway in Corby, the location for the inaugural British Champ Car event in September. Lapping the track in a road car, Franchitti was excited with the prospect of racing in his home country, saying, I' I think it is great for the fans and great for us to be coming over to a market where there is a lot of enthusiasm for the racing series. I think it is going to be a lot of fun."

Michael Krumm, from Keutlingen in Germany, is one of seven rookie drivers in the Series. Krumm has one of the busiest race seasons ahead of him this year as he combines racing in the Japanese Formula Nippon Series with driving duties for Dale Coyne Racing in his Phoenix powered Reynard champ car. Krumm looks forward to the Long Beach race, saying, "In general I like street circuits. They are very demanding and having raced on several in F3, I am looking forward to visiting Long Beach for the first time. Mexico was a fantastic experience. The Mexican fans were amazing; it was definitely the biggest race of my career so far. I have always held the ambition to race in CART and to finally achieve this and make a very strong performance in the race was great. It is a shame we did not get to the finish in the first event [due to mechanical failure], but now I am just looking forward to Long Beach."

The 2001 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Eeach, Southern California's official "Spring Erake", alongside the cars and stars of the CART FedEx Championship Series, will feature the 26th Anniversary Toyota ProlCelebrity Race, Dayton lndy Lights, Toyota Atlantic Championship and Trans-Am Series.

The FedEx Championship Series Long Eeach race will be shown live on Eurosport on 8'" April from 20.00 - 22.00 CET, 21 .00 - 23.00 in the UK.

28 Rennfahrer und 17 Rennteams sind in dieser Woche in Long Beach, Kalifornien eingetroffen, urn den zweiten Lauf zur FedEx Championship Rennserie auszufahren. Nach einer vierwdchigen Pause seit dem Eriffnungslauf der Saison in Monterrey, Mexiko steht am kommenden Wochenende das erste US-Rennen 2001 auf dern Programm. Die rraditionsveranstaltung an der ka1ifornist;hen Pazifikkuste vor der Kulisse der Queen Mary gilt als eines der glamordsesten und prestigetrachtigsten Champ Car-Rennen des ganzen Jahfes. Der 3,17 km lange ternporare Stadtkurs a la Monte Carlo, auf dem im vergangenen Jahr Paul Tracy als Sieger abgewunken wurde, ist irnmer fur ausgeglichene und spannende Rennen gut: Die envarteteten rund 200 000 Zuschauer vor Ort und das weltweite Femsehpublikum von geschatzten 60 Millionen Rennfans sollten also auf ihre Kosten komrnen.

Eeirn ersten Saisonrennen der FedEx Championship vor einem Monat triumphierte der Erasilianer Cristiano da Matta im Team von Newman Haas Racing und kommt mit diesem Etfolgs-Drehmoment nach Long Beach. Da Matta weiR nur zu gut, daR in dieser Meisterschaft, die als eine der hart umkampftesten internationalen Formel-Kennserien der Welt gilt, nahezu jeder seiner 27 Gegner in der Lage ist, um den Rennsieg oder zumindest um einen Platz auf dem Treppchen rnitzufahren. "In Mexiko ist es uns gelungen, erfolgreich in die Saison zu starten", erklart da Matta, der als Teamneuling in der Truppe von Carl Haas und Filmstar Paul Newman ein Traumeinstand feiern konnte. "Fur Long Beach bin ich optimistisch. In der Winterpause absolvierte unser Team ausfuhrliche Tests auf dem Holperkurs von Sebring in Florida, der der Piste von Long Eeach durt;haus vergleichbar ist. Insofern bin k h bester Dinge und erwarte, dafl wir ein gutes, konkurrenzfahiges Rennfahrzeug haben sollten. Wie stark wir gegenuber der Konkurrenz aussehen werden, ist sehr schwer vorherzusagen: Die FedEx Championship ist so wettbewerbsintensiv, daR du selbst bei optimaler Vorbereitung nie sicher sein kannst, wirklich in die Top 5 zu fahren, da gibt es immer einige Fragezeichen."

Europa wird in der FedEx Championship Rennserie 200'1 durch Fahrer aus Deutschland, Italien, Frankreich, Groflbritannien, Schweden und Spanien bestens vertreten. Dario Franchitti aus Schottland fahrt nun im funften Jahr in dieser Meisterschaft und gilt erneut als einer der Titelfavoriten. Die vierwtichige Pause uberbruckte Franchitti mit dem Besuch der Oscar-Verleihung in Hollywood und einer Europareise zur Familie und zum Rockingham Motor Speedway irn englischen Corby, dort wo im September das allererste Champ Car Rennen in Groflbritannien stattfinden wird. Nachdem Dario die brandneue Rennstrecke in einem Straflenauto umrundet hatte, zeigte er sich begeistert von der Vorstellung, dort vor heimischen Publikum fahren zu kinnen: "lch denke, dies ist toll fur die Fans und toll fur uns, mit den Champ Cars uber den Atlantik zu kornmen in ein Land mit so groRer Motorsport- Eegeisterung. Ich glaube, wir werden alle vie1 SpaR haben."

Michael Krumm aus Keutlingen in Deutschland ist einer von sieben sogenannten "Rookies", also Neulingen in der FedEx Championship. Krumm steht vor einem extrem anstrengenden Jahr, fahrt er neben den 21 Champ Car-Saisonrennen im Team von Andreas LeberlelChristian DannedDale Coyne auch noch die Formel Nippon-Rennserie in Japan. Michael freut sich auf das bevorstehende Rennwochenende in Long Eeach: "lch mag StraRenkurse, die sind sehr anspruchsvoll. In meiner Formel 3-Zeit bin ich oft auf solchen Strecken gefahren. Mexiko war schon ein tole Erfahrung, diese Zuschauermassen und diese sudlandische Eegeisterung: Definitiv war Mexiko mein grdfites Erlebnis als Kennfahrer. Schon lange wollte ich CAKT-Rennen fahren, habe viele Jahre daran gearbeitet den Einstieg zu schaffen - nun habe ich's tatsachlich geschafft und konnte gleich im ersten Kennen eine gute Form zeigen, das 1st grokartig. Schade war nur, dah wir fur unsere starkeleistung am Ende wegen eines technischen Defektes nicht belohnt wurden. Vielleicht kBnnen wir ja in Long Beach ahnlich eindrucksvoll auftrumpfen und haben dann auch noch das notwendige Rennglkk."

Eeim Toyota Grand Prix von Long Eeach, der als offizieller Friihlingsanfang in Sudkalifornien gilt, stehen die Stars und Cars aus der CART FedEx Championship im Mittelpunkt. Daneben gibt es ein umfangreiches Kahmenprogramm: das zum 25.Mal ausgetragenen Toyota ProlCelebrity Kennen, die Dayton lndy Lights, die Toyota Atlantic: Meisterschaft und die Trans-Am Rennserie.

Die LIVE-ubertragung im Fernsehen des Long Eeach-Rennen zur FedEx Championship beginnt am Sonntag, den 8.April urn 22.00 Uhr auf EUROSPORT.
