CHAMPCAR/CART: New European Broadcast Lineup for 2000 Season Announced

DETROIT (April 8, 2000) - Championship Auto Racing Teams has announced a new European broadcast strategy for the 2000 FedEx Championship Series season.

The key to the strategy is a move toward building terrestrial television coverage on a country-by-country basis. So far, the strategy has resulted in terrestrial coverage being secured or pending in 18 individual European countries.

The country-by-country coverage is being built without any loss of the wide distribution provided by Eurosport, which provides pan-European coverage. Eurosport's coverage consists of a delayed broadcast on Wednesdays following each race.

In addition to race coverage on Eurosport, the network will air a weekly motorsports program that will heavily feature the FedEx Championship Series. This show will also air on Wednesdays.

"The year 2000 is a year of transition as we start to build a terrestrial TV business in Europe," said Keith Allo, CART's vice president of television. "We are pleased with the initial reaction, with 18 countries already on board or in final negotiation to come on board and broadcast the FedEx Championship Series. The benefits of this approach are that we can provide our fans with coverage that is tailor-made to meet their national interests. We anticipate that we will add further broadcasters throughout the year.

"From an audience perspective, we believe the Eurosport Wednesday time slot will perform at least as well as the previous Sunday slot. With the addition of terrestrial coverage, which in some countries will be on more than one broadcaster, we believe we will see substantial increases in our total European audience in 2000."

The individual rights negotiations were coordinated by ESPN International, CART's distribution partner in Europe.
