Daly takes full blame for Newgarden shunt
Conor Daly has confessed his error on old tires is what triggered the shunt that has sent his former Indy Lights teammate Josef Newgarden to hospital.

Daly had made his tires last longer than most of his competitors, and as they ducked into the pits, he had risen to the top five. However, Newgarden, who had stopped just two laps earlier, was rapidly gaining on him with fresh tires when he came to go around the outside of the Dale Coyne Racing-Honda through Turns 3 and 4.
Daly was on the lower line which he believed was a contributory factor in the shunt, which occurred when his tail snapped out of line. Daly gathered it up but the tail snapped into line with the fronts pointing up the track, sending him into Newgarden’s Ed Carpenter Racing-Chevrolet.
Daly told NBCSports: “I didn’t expect that at all. We were consistently running, running, running and all of a sudden the rears totally lost grip. It felt like it floated all the way through the corners.
“So it was all my mistake. I should have recognized that. Definitely a rookie mistake.
“I tried to stay a little bit lower because I knew Josef was coming and so maybe by pinching it [on the low line] I put too much load on the right rear.
“Although the car was quite good, it was on the edge through Turns 3 and 4 the whole time. So I apologized to Josef [in the Medical Center]. My mistake for sure.
“He’s a tough kid. I grew up with him but I felt so bad. To ruin someone’s race is never cool. My bad.”
The race was put under yellow as debris was cleared and the SAFER barrier repaired. However, the race already delayed from last night, has now been halted altogether by storms, at the lap 71 mark. It would need to reach half distance - 125 laps - for full points to be awarded.
Competitions director Jay Frye says IndyCar is still hopeful of getting the race completed this evening.
