Practice report

Ganassi cars dominate practice at Texas

Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan led the only practice session for tonight’s Firestone 600, which will resume on Lap 72 of the original June event.

Reigning IndyCar champion Dixon lapped the 1.5-mile oval at 214.937mph, 0.5 quicker than Chip Ganassi Racing-Chevrolet teammate Tony Kanaan, and some 1.8mph quicker than the best of the rest, Marco Andretti in the Andretti Autosport-Honda.

However, the Ganassi drivers will be restarting in 14th and 16th, as they incurred damage and were delayed in the first portion of  the race, when they struck some of the debris left by the Conor Daly/Josef Newgarden shunt.

Graham Rahal was fourth fastest for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing-Honda, with Sebastien Bourdais fifth for KVSH Racing-Chevy. Juan Pablo Montoya was fastest of the Penske-Chevy entries in sixth, while the cars that will occupy the first two spots on the 2.5-month delayed restart, James Hinchcliffe (Schmidt Peterson-Honda) and Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti) were seventh and eighth.

Championship leader Simon Pagenaud was ninth, while the drivers who fought for the win at Pocono and who line up third and fourth here at Texas Motor Speedway – Mikhail Aleshin and Will Power – were only 15th and 16th.

The only incident of note came when Takuma Sato suffered right-rear suspension failure in his AJ Foyt Racing-Honda in the opening minute of practice and drifted up high and into the wall at Turn 4.

The team is currently repairing the car, while the other remaining 19 competitors - Newgarden and Daly were not allowed to restart this portion of the race - had their cars impounded after a permitted 15 minutes of fettling.
