Indy Lights drivers to test IndyCars at Road America

Nico Jamin, Zachary Claman DeMelo, Matheus Leist and Dalton Kellett are set to test for Andretti Autosport and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports in Wednesday’s team test at Road America.

Jamin and Kellett, who race for Andretti Autosport in Indy Lights, and Carlin Racing’s Matheus Leist, will share cars with Ryan Hunter-Reay, Alexander Rossi and Marco Andretti.

Meanwhile Claman De Melo, another Carlin driver, will share James Hinchcliffe’s Schmidt Peterson Motorsports-Honda.

Despite having both its cars involved in the eight-car shunt at Texas Motor Speedway, it’s understood that Dale Coyne Racing will attend the test as planned, with its fulltime rookie Ed Jones and one other driver. That is assumed to be former Formula 1 driver Esteban Gutierrez.

Both of the Schmidt Peterson cars were involved in the TMS shunt, too, but team owner Sam Schmidt said that hadn’t directly affected plans for the Road America test.

“Those were our superspeedway cars, but our road course cars from Detroit were ready,” said Schmidt.

“So with the #5 car, we’ll be at Road America doing a half day with Hinch and Zachary. By testing Lights drivers for half a day, teams don’t lose it from their allotment of private test days.

“Mikhail [Aleshin, Hinchcliffe’s teammate] has to be at Le Mans, so we’ve sent his car to the shaker-rig.

“Unfortunately it means there’s no rest for our crews, that’s for sure, not with this schedule, and especially when you throw a bunch of crash damage into the equation.”
