Fastest Lap Time Of Race Leads Bourdais To Second Sixth-Place Finish
Sebastien Bourdais posted the fastest lap time of the Sunday’s Edmonton Indy on his last lap, with a time of 1:18:959, on his way to a second consecutive sixth-place finish. The driver of the #19 Boy Scouts of America car was the only one to run a lap on the 2.24-mile street course at the Edmonton City Centre Airport under 1:19.000 throughout the race. . {{
Bourdais has raced previously three times in Edmonton, winning two and finishing second in the other. But that was on the old track configuration, so it was a whole new learning experience for former four-time Champ Car Series Champion this time around.
After earning a spot in the Firestone Fastest 12 during qualifying on Saturday, Bourdais started the race 12th. He moved through the field quickly, running as high as fifth-place just before the first set of pit stops on lap 27. On lap 51, Bourdais was pressing hard to overtake Danica Patrick when he went off the track at turn seven and lost four spots in the process. He was quickly able to work his way back up through the field to an eventual sixth-place finish.
“I am very happy with the way this race turned out,” Bourdais said. “I came out with a determination to fight and the BSA crew guys helped me do just that. I was really pushing the #19 Boy Scouts of America car hard, but I made a couple mistakes out on the track, which cost me a few positions. Finishing in the top-six for two weekends in-a row is certainly something that we’re proud of and shows we’re moving in the right direction as a team.”
After a very strong morning warm-up session, rookie James Jakes felt confident that the #18 Acorn Stairlifts team could have a strong finish in Edmonton on Sunday.
When crashes brought out the caution flag on lap two, Jakes made what should have been a routine pit stop to top off the fuel. But trouble with the fuel valve caused Jakes to drop down from 18th to 24th place. Jakes was able to move through the field up to a high position of 15 and ended up finishing 18th.
“We were much stronger than our finishing position today showed,” Jakes said. “Having the fuel value problems probably unfortunately cost us a career best finish on the day. We really made some steps forward this weekend and I’m looking forward to the race at Mid-Ohio in two weeks. The #18 Acorn Stairlifts crew did another great job this weekend.”
