JOLIET, Ill. (Sept. 5, 2003) -- Team 7-Eleven driver Tony Kanaan didn't find his name at the top of the speed chart after a pair of practice sessions Friday at Chicagoland Speedway, but is determined to put his name at the top of the final race results on Sunday afternoon.
Kanaan logged a total of 89 laps Friday -- 35 in the morning session and 54 in the afternoon -- on his way to posting a quick lap of 220.586 miles per hour. While the lap wasn't the fastest among the 22 Indy Racing League (IRL) IndyCar Series competitors that worked out on Friday, Kanaan felt confident he is developing a good race car for Sunday's Delphi Indy 300.
Kanaan will turn his attention to qualifying during Saturday morning's practice, which begins at 11:15 a.m. (EDT). Qualifying is slated for 5:30 p.m. (EDT) on the 1.5-mile oval.
TONY KANAAN, #11 TEAM 7-ELEVEN DALLARA/HONDA/FIRESTONE:
"I think we have a good race car, so we just need to work on finding a little bit more speed for qualifying and for the race. But, I'm confident for the race on Sunday. I'm not too sure about qualifying right now, but we'll get some more work done tomorrow and get a little closer to where we need to be."
KIM GREEN, PRESIDENT, ANDRETTI GREEN RACING:
"Today we really continued on from our test, which I thought was productive. We've got to have a race car that can run side-by-side with other cars through the corners because we think we're going to see a lot of that this weekend, so we'll continue to work on that. I think we've still got to find some speed. We're not 100 percent happy with where we're at, so we'll work on that a bit more tomorrow morning. "The race setup is absolutely the critical one, but we obviously want to qualify up front, as well, so we'll continue to work on both between now and tomorrow afternoon."
