RACING ISN'T EVERYTHING AT TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY THIS WEEK
FORT WORTH-DALLAS (October 12, 1999) - By the time the green flag drops for the Mall.com 500 Pep Boys Indy Racing League Championship on Sunday, Oct. 17, race fans at Texas Motor Speedway will have been treated to a smorgasbord of entertainment. The IRL race caps the race schedule that also includes the Friday night O'Reilly 300 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race. The weekend is filled with fast trucks, fast cars, high flying motorcycles, fender-bending taxis, and yes, a wedding!
JUMP START - Motorcycle daredevils Doug Danger, Super Ken Mackow and Bob Peet will compete in the World Motorcycle Jumping Championship in the infield of Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 2:00 p.m., following the Dallas Morning News Pep Boys Indy Racing League Pole Day. Danger, who holds the world's record for the longest ramp to ramp jump of 251 feet, will lead the contenders in the competition for distance and accuracy. Following the competition, Peet will attempt to set a new world record for "no hands" jump.
MAY I HAVE THE ENVELOPE PLEASE - The winner of the "Best Looking Indy Racing League Car of the Year" will be announced at 11:00 a.m. in the Media Center at Texas Motor Speedway. Nominees were selected by more than 4,500 race fans, IRL community members and journalists via Internet voting at www.speedwayonline.com and at www.Tokheim.com. The three finalists are Scott Goodyear (Car #4), Stephan Gregoire (Car #7), and Plano resident Greg Ray (Car #2). Scott Swogger, President of Tokheim U.S., will present the award. The Tokheim Corporation (NYSE: TOK), the official fuel dispenser of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and associate sponsor of Dick Simon Racing, launched the contest during the Indianapolis 500 on May 30, 1999.
WITH THIS RING. - Wedding bells will be ringing in Victory Lane on Saturday following Indy Car qualifying as Fort Worth residents Rickie Newton and Michelle Peryam exchange their vows in front of thousands of racing fans at the speedway.
"Our first date was here at Texas Motor Speedway two years ago. We wanted to do something different and since we're both big race fans, thought it only logical for us to be married in a place we both love", said Peryam.
ALL HAIL THE TAXIS - The fan-favorite Great American Taxi Race is part of the pre-race activities on Sunday, Oct. 17, prior to the Mall.com 500. Drivers from three Dallas-area cab companies will be banging fenders on the quarter-mile oval of the speedway and negotiating a number of driving and parking challenges to determine who is king of the cabs. Pre-race activities begin at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
