The #12 Penske’s 67.0198sec fastest time was a scant 0.0975sec ahead of the Chip Ganassi Racing-Chevy of Scott Dixon, who has never finished off the podium at Barber since the event started back in 2010, but has also never stood on the top step.

Power looked to be on a fast lap in the closing moments but understeered at Turn 5.

Despite the top spots falling to Chevy, Honda again looked strong with James Hinchcliffe of Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and Carlos Munoz of Andretti Autosport finishing the 45-minute session in third and fourth, ahead of another Penske, that of current championship leader Simon Pagenaud.

Sebastien Bourdais maintained his strong form from yesterday, slotting the KVSH Racing-Chevy into sixth, ahead of Juan Montoya’s Penske and the second SPM-Honda of Mikhail Aleshin

Last year’s winner and runner-up – Josef Newgarden (Ed Carpenter Racing-Chevrolet) and Graham Rahal (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing-Honda) – completed the top 10.

Having gone without even a yellow flag in yesterday’s practice sessions, FP3 was red-flagged twice – once for a spin and stall from Max Chilton in the Ganassi #8, and again at the end when Takuma Sato dumped his AJ Foyt Racing-Honda in the gravel at Turn 5.
