Team Penske dominates third practice at IMS

Will Power led a Penske-Chevrolet 1-2-3 around the IMS road course as AJ Foyt Racing produced the fastest Honda-powered cars of the session, recovering from yesterday’s underwhelming performances.

Power trimmed his fastest time of the event to a 1min09.3189sec – an average speed of 126.667mph – but was less than a tenth faster than teammates Juan Pablo Montoya and Simon Pagenaud.

Scott Dixon survived a short trip across the Speedway’s wet but well manicured infield grass to go fourth fastest for Chip Ganassi Racing-Chevy.

The first of the Hondas was Takuma Sato in fifth for AJ Foyt Racing, less than 0.2sec off Power’s fastest time, and narrowly edging Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport-Honda), yesterday’s fastest Honda driver, Graham Rahal, and Carlos Munoz in a second Andretti machine.

Another driver to improve substantially this morning was Tony Kanaan, who was within 0.2sec of teammate Dixon.

While Spencer Pigot’s 15th and Matt Brabham’s 23rd appeared to be nothing special, both young American rookies continued to whittle at the gap to their respective teammates.  Pigot was under two-tenths slower than RLLR teammate Rahal, while despite missing yesterday’s morning practice, Brabham has cut the gap to his KVSH Racing partner Sebastien Bourdais to under 0.6sec.

Qualifying begins at 3pm ET.
