Barber Indy Lights: Herta dominates Race 2, stretches points lead

Andretti Steinbrenner Racing’s Colton Herta disappeared from his opposition at Barber Motorsports Park to score his second win from the opening four rounds of the 2017 Indy Lights championship.

On a patchily damp track, Herta survived an early restart and left fellow front-row starter, Juncos Racing’s Kyle Kaiser, behind to win by over nine seconds after 35 laps of the 2.38-mile road course in Birmingham, Alabama.

Kaiser, who is Herta’s closest opponent in this year’s title fight, was a comfortable two seconds ahead of Nico Jamin in the second Andretti Autosport entry.

In fact Jamin, who won yesterday’s race here at Barber, spent most the race keeping an eye on his mirrors for Carlin Racing’s Neil Alberico.

Alberico, who finished third in Saturday’s race, has been reborn this year since taking on Jack Harvey – a two-time series runner-up – as his driver coach, and he finished less than 0.7sec behind Jamin.

Aaron Telitz of Belardi Auto Racing started third but soon fell to fifth and would cross the line seven seconds behind the Jamin/Alberico battle, but 2.8s ahead of the second Juncos car of Nicolas Dapero.

Matheus Leist was seventh for Carlin, Shelby Blackstock took eighth for Belardi, while Ryan Norman put a late pass on Andretti teammate Dalton Kellett to grab ninth.

Zachary Claman De Melo (Carlin) and Pato O’Ward (Team Pelfrey) collided on the opening lap and were unable to rejoin.

This race marked the 400th in Indy Lights history.
