Pigot sweeps Indy Lights at Barber

Spencer Pigot did a carbon copy of what he did in 2014 at Barber Motorsports Park. He swept the weekend driving his Juncos Racing car, except this time it was in Indy Lights instead of Pro Mazda.

During race two, Pigot led from the start, much like the first race yesterday. He was able to pull out a small gap on the rest of the field, but chaos ensued behind him.

In-race drama

Pigot’s teammate, Kyle Kaiser, made contact with championship leader Ed Jones’s car. Jones went off course at turn five while Kaiser continued for two laps with a damaged front wing. Kaiser and Jones both pitted for a new front wing and new rear tire, respectively, and both went back into the action.

Pigot caught up with Jones later in the race to lap him but Jones did not make it easy for Pigot to get past him. A full course yellow would have let Jones catch up to the rear of the field, but it never came and Pigot was able to get around Jones after the two made contact coming out of turn 17.

“I was behind him, he was obviously a lap or two down but he was in front of me so I was trying to pass him and get clean air again because when the car’s that close in front of you, it forces you to abuse your tires a little bit and that’s not what I wanted to do. I saw him turning in in the corner of my eye and just decided to back out of it, luckily I did in time where all he hit was my front wheel and nothing else,” Pigot said.

Pigot got around Jones and led the rest of the way without incident while Jones finished 11th, handing Pigot the points lead. Jack Harvey finished second for the fourth time out of five races this year while Jones’s teammate Max Chilton finished third.

“We had the car sorted out very quickly when we got off the trailer on Friday. The car’s been fantastic all three days and when the car’s that good and everyone’s performing well, you’ve got to try taking advantage of it because it doesn’t happen very often with the competition like we have in Indy Lights this year,” Pigot said.

A great track for a new car

“This is the best track for this car I’ve driven so far. This is more like a British circuit; slightly smaller but very undulating, very rewarding when you get it right, it’s a feel good track. It’s a lovely facility, I call it the Augusta of race circuits because when you walk around and do your track walk on Thursday you might as well have a set of golf clubs on your back because it’s all manicured, the birds are tweeting, it’s just a lovely lovely circuit and I look forward to coming back here again soon,” Chilton said.

Pigot takes the points lead from Jones as the series heads to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course for the Indianapolis Grand Prix races and also for the Freedom 100 before the Indianapolis 500.
