Veach edges Indy Lights pole for Belardi

Zach Veach left it until his 11th of 12 laps to nail his fastest time and land pole at Road America, beating championship contender Santiago Urrutia by 0.0139sec.

Veach delivered a 127.456mph lap to grab his first – and Belardi Auto Racing’s second – pole position of the 2016 season. Veach, who cruelly missed out on victory at the season-opener in St. Petersburg, is without his regular teammate Felix Rosenqvist this weekend, as the Swede is on DTM test duty for Mercedes-Benz in Europe.

Yet Veach reported that his only problem with getting up to speed was overdriving until setting his fastest lap.

Urrutia’s second fastest time at least ensured his Schmidt Peterson Motorsports car will start ahead of points leader Ed Jones, whose Carlin Racing car was only eight-thousandths slower. This pair are separated by 39 points in the championship, first and third.

The driver in second place in the title race, Dean Stoneman of Andretti Autosport, was fifth fastest, albeit half a second off Veach’s pace. He will start behind the second SPM car of Andre Negrao, but ahead of the second Carlin entry of Felix Serralles.

Kyle Kaiser was seventh in the fastest of the Juncos Racing entries, followed by the Team Pelfrey pair, Garett Grist ahead of Juan Piedrahita. Grist is making his Lights debut having replaced Scott Hargrove in the #3 car.

Another series debutant, James French, was 12th fastest in Rosenqvist’s Belardi entry.
