The Burris Circle Tour made its 3rd stop of the season at Lake Geneva Raceway. Lake Geneva Raceway is big wide open 1/3 mile high banked paved oval track located about one hour and 30 minute from downtown Chicago IL. The name of the game at Lake Geneva is drafting. If you don't have a drafting partner it can be a long race day. The racetrack is banked 15 degrees in the corners, 8 degrees on the back straight and flat on the front straight. The track layout makes for some very exciting racing. It's not uncommon to see 6 to 8 Briggs karts in the lead draft fighting it out coming out of turn four racing for the checker flag. One of the biggest surprises in Sunday race came in the Briggs Medium Class. Nikki Yepsen from South Elgin, IL surprised at field for very experienced racers taking home her first victory in a senior class. Nikki raced last year in the Junior Briggs restricted class. Nikki finished a few feet in front of karting veteran Jay Gough of Rockford, IL, Lake Geneva, WI native Brandon Hill and local favorite David Byrne from nearby Shullsburg, WI. Nikki took the lead about ½ way through the feature and never looked pack. Nikki held off several strong runs by the lead pack of Jamie Rediehs, Dave Budres, and Jonathan Hassler that group lost the draft and finished 5th thru 7th. Jay Gough closed up in the last 3 laps to make the finish exciting. The Legends car driver Kurt Gnatzig lead Al Smith for only 35 feet in the 25 lap features. Of course it was the last 35 feet. Kurt was one of the few people at the track who didn't know he won. Kurt was truly surprise when he learned he won. Head Score Jenny Weter said, "Gnatzig got under Smith coming out of turn 4 and stayed there to the start finish line. It was very close." Sunday also debut the Briggs Sportsman Class at the Burris Circle tour. J.J. Adams, Wonder Lake, IL, was the first feature winner in this new class. First year racer Linda Slabenak, Palos Park, IL can home second followed by J.R. Zink from Glendale Heights. This class is designed for drivers over 35 and new adult drivers. Don't worry; proof of age is not required. The weight for the class is 360 lbs. The intent of the class is to give experienced drivers a place to race and still be able to watch their kids race and give new adult drivers a place to learn the basics of racing without having to run in the very competitive Light, Medium and Heavy classes. Drivers under 35 are expected to move to the other Briggs classes once they feel comfortable. Race director John Nuttall said, "We are sure this will be a great addition to our program." The next race in the Burris Circle Tour is Sunday June 4, 2000 at Joliet Memorial Stadium. The feature event of the day is the Burris Racing Twin 50's. The Briggs Light and Briggs Heavy Classes will each run a 50-lap feature race. Andy Moser won the last two Burris 50 lap races.
